Dear visitor,

Before inviting you to discover one of the most untouched regions of Brazil's Northeast, we would like to introduce ourselves.
Since 1995 46-year-old Swiss Robert and his Brazilian wife Nelma run the pousada "Chalé Suíço" in Parnaíba/Piauì. Part of this small hotel at the outskirts of the city of Parnaíba is the restaurant "Guilherme Tell". Robert Schiess has travelled widely in South America, be it by foot, train, or bike. It was during these travels that he decided to settle at the coast of Parnaíba - not being able to resist the fascinating landscape and life's unequalled purity in this particular region of Brazil. His wife Nelma, a true Parnaíban, knows how to make a stay at Parnaíba a pleasurable one, offering insights into the great diversity of the region's traditional culture. Visiting Parnaíba means discovering the new and the unknown - Robert and Nelma are there on the spot to accompany you on this adventure.

Why this website?
The beauty of Brazil's Northeast and the whole-heartedness of its people, who despite poverty have got their heart on the right spot, are reason enough for this website. Let us try to interpret the idea of globalisation our own way. Only the ones who combine tradition and modernity socially and globally, are able to offer a good future to all of us.
In Piauì, Ceará und Maranhão you still find paradisiac settings. Observing the fishermen in their small boats one is reminded of scenes evoked by the writings of Hemingway and Stevenson, or Gaugin's paintings. The clocks seem to stand still around here. What to the European belongs to the realm of the exotic, is part of the often very cruel reality in this part of the world. Robert and Nelma know that they can't offer their guests the comfort of pure luxury during a stay here. But, their philosophy follows the idea of so called "smooth" tourism, which in its own way has a great many treasures to offer. As stressed-out West-Europeans you can learn here how to deal more consciously with what you've got. Robert and Nelma are convinced that the "Nordestinos" let you join in on the Brazilian "lightness of being". In return, a price is to be paid that constitutes a fair deal between the hosts and their guests, and from which both sides are to profit. Robert and Nelma Schiess' pousada "Chalé Suíço" is an attempt to cultivate this sort of modest and smooth tourism.
